A documentary film about ice and about large image photography by Bernd Nicolaisen, with breathtaking images from inside Icelandic glaciers. In the focus: fascinating portrayals using light – images are created from ice and lava in caves made of 1000-year-old glacial ice.
The viewer is taken along to places which had previously been hidden to him and which he had probably never seen in this form.
The film “residual light” picks up the fascination surrounding the refraction of light in the glacial ice and presents this visual world to the public. With the music from the Icelandic artist Olafur Arnalds and photographs by Bernd Nicolaisen, the film wants to take the viewer into this magical world. The radiance of Bernd Nicolaisen’s images is unique and clearly demonstrates the beauty and the transience of the ice. Taken over a period of six years and with all of the richness of detail provided by large-scale photography, the film is also a homage to analogue photography. Through the film, Christoph Frutiger and Bernd Nicolaisen manage to convey the impressive, mystical yet also volatile world of the Icelandic glaciers using unique and magical images.
